Is Ice Cream Making You Hungrier?
I read a very interesting article from ScienceLive . Recent studies have found that animal saturated fats (milk, beef, butter, ice cream, etc.) can have a certain amount of control over your brain’s desire to eat more, which is not the case with other fats found in nut and vegetable oils.
The studies were performed by the UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Generally when your body is full the brain signals the release of the hormones leptin and insulin, causing that full feeling. However, it seems that when the body is filled with saturated animal fats those fatty acids almost put the brain into hypnosis, not realizing the need to turn off the hunger signals. The end result is overeating.
There is one specific fat found in saturated fats – “palmitic acid which is found in beef, butter, cheese and milk, – is particularly effective at instigating this mechanism.” When various types of fats were tested and compared such as ice cream, olive oil, and other unsaturated fats, it was specifically the palmitic acid which triggered this change in brain chemistry of wanting to eat more and more.
Moral of the research: Eat minimal amounts of animal fats and eat less than your body desires. Sorry, only one scoop of ice cream not two or try the Coconut Bliss ice cream instead J
