Baby Got Backed Up
I have the perfect cure for constipated babies…pureed young coconut meat and fresh young coconut water. I am a huge advocate for drinking coconut water but don’t forget about the delicious meat! Every part of the young coconut is amazing for babies and Toddlers and in my opinion should almost be a requirement for optimal health
I hear from so many moms concerned about their baby/toddler being constipated and not going regularly. Almost every baby, after being introduced to solids, experiences some degree of constipation. Those first two months of eating solids can be very difficult on their little system and it is hard to make that transition from pure raw liquids (especially if nursing) to cooked, processed foods that have no enzymes to aid in digestion. Their tiny tummies are used to breast milk that is full of raw enzymes and requires no aid from the body to digest.
What do pediatricians generally recommend as the first food? Baby cereal made from rice or oats. Not only is this a cooked food, it is also very processed and has very little nutritional value. This food alone is generally the cause of constipation. Nature has provided another food that is the ideal first food and is the answer to constipation. The meat from young coconuts is raw, loaded with enzymes to aid in digestion, packed with protein, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids. Their little stomachs can easily absorb the nutrients and break it down. The coconut water is just as nutrient-rich and provides electrolytes and enzymes.
Since my son was about 5 months old, I have been feeding him young coconut pudding. He was constipated in the beginning with the baby cereals, and even adding the prunes/prune juice did nothing. I decided to buy the fresh young coconuts, scoop out the meat inside, and puree in a blender with some of the coconut water. I would mix it with fresh pureed fruit and occasionally with cereal. He absolutely loved it!
The coconut water is just as important as the meat. It softens the stools and keeps their system flowing easily with tons of raw enzymes. I also gave him about 2 ounces of the young coconut water, 2-3 times daily in a bottle. The combination of the two eliminated his constipation! He seemed much happier and had a minimum of 1-2 bowl movements a day.
As he got older I would add a little Agave, cinnamon and vanilla for flavor to the coconut pudding. He absolutely loved it. By about 7 months I began mixing it with goat yogurt. Even to this day, that is what he has for breakfast.
He drinks the coconut water daily between meals and after playing (it cools the body and replenishes electrolytes lost from sweating). I make him a bottle a few times a day that has about 2-3 ounces of coconut water with some goat and hemp milk. He probably gets more excited about his “ba-ba” than anything else in the day, next to playing in the sand.
