I will never eat Movie Popcorn Again

I know that everyone loves to go to the movies and eat popcorn.  Not to alarm you but I feel it is my duty to share some surprising studies!

quarterlb+   butter   =   pop2That is so disturbing!

According to new studies done by CSPI (Center for Science in the Public Interest) “A medium-sized popcorn and medium soda at the nation’s largest movie chains pack the nutritional equivalent of three Quarter Pounders topped with 12 pats of butter”.

At first I assumed that the popcorn they were referring to was popped in butter – I was wrong.  That study was referring to popcorn that was popped in oil.  Can you imagine?  Most people go out to dinner and then to a movie where they have a fun evening snack of a medium or large popcorn.  That is scary to imagine how many calories and fat one would consume after a night of dinner out and a movie!!

Regal theaters were reported to sell medium sized popcorn tubs (about 20 cups), containing a whopping 1200 calories and 60 grams of saturated fat.   Plus the sodium content is enough to make you blow up like a balloon – 980 milligrams!  Then if you decide to add that chemical butter topping, you are ingesting 200 more calories and at least another 6-8 grams of saturated fat.

I am not trying to scare you I just want to make sure that we are all aware of what we are putting into our bodies.  I am guilty of being the occasional popcorn buyer at the movies thinking that as long as I omitted the butter it couldn’t be too horrible.  Well, now I know.  I will continue to do like we did as a kid…air pop the popcorn at home ahead of time and season with olive oil, Celtic Sea Salt and Nutritional Yeast.
