My Weekend Splurges!
Weekends, especially birthday weekends, are meant for a little splurging. I eat so healthy (about 70% raw during the week
and little to no processed) that I occasionally indulge in a few of life’s simple pleasures: wine, sweet potato fries, dark chocolate, chai lattes, guacamole and chips, etc. My motto is that if you are going to indulge a little in foods/drinks then enjoy them and don’t feel guilty. Just splurge in moderation; One glass of wine and not a whole bottle; few bites of dark chocolate rather than a whole bar of milk chocolate; Healthy meal with a side of yummy sweet potato fries.
If you are eating healthy 80-90% of the time and exercising, you have a little “splurge room”. Keep in mind that when you indulge in rich foods, if you don’t combine them with other foods, it gives your body a chance to digeset it. Plus, when I splurge on foods, I always keep digestive enzymes with me and we carry a Kombucha Tea – both aiding in digestion and settles the tummy in case you overdo it. Here were my birthday weekend splurges…
Saturday first started off with probably the best massage and reflexology treatment ever. Carrying and picking up my 27 pound son tends to wreak havoc on my back and neck. So, thankfully I was given two hours of complete bliss – massage is a rare occasion for me, but it’s my birthday! I went to Petite Spa in Santa Monica and had the best masseuse ever, Dida – I highly recommend her. She specializes in sport injuries and deep tissue work (I have many sport injuries from martial arts and swimming). After our wonderful 2 hour session, I drank a ton of alkaline water, followed by a Matcha Green tea drink.
Food time! We were starved and stopped by a local health food store, Rainbow Acres, and grabbed some yummy goodies. I had some of their veggie sushi rolls made with all veggies and avocado, wrapped in rice paper. Of course we had to get a few Dolphin Chocolates – our favorite! Small dairy-free dark chocolates, sweetened with malted barley. To balance out the meal, we bought their delicious fresh-made guacamole and sweet potato chips made by Vegetas (the best). Washed it down with a couple of digestive enzymes and we were good to go!
My next biggest weakness to dark chocolate is Chai. I am not a fan of syrup-based chai, loaded with sugar. I love my chai extra spicy and not too sweet. We normally drink Bridgette’s chai at home, but decided to find something on the road. We had to drive into Culver City and found a great café called the Wood Café Organic Coffee and Food. We tried their soy Chai Latte and absolutely loved it. Brewed fresh, not too sweet, a bit spicy, and had the best after taste. I could definitely taste the cardamom and pepper. YUM!!
After the veggie sushi rolls, chocolates, chips and guac and 2 large chai’s, we weren’t too hungry for dinner. We drank some Synergy Kombucha tea to get our digestive juices flowing, in hopes ofs getting an appetite for dinner. However, instead of dinner, I thought, why not drinks and appetizers. Actually, at restaurants, my favorite choices are the appetizers. I love trying a few appetizers instead of one main entre, that way you can try small amounts of various dishes. We ended up at Beechwood, a fun spot in Marina del Rey that I have always wanted to check out. It is a great evening, classy, schmoozing type hangout that is great for a date night! J We ended up with some Australian red wine and the best sweet potato fries dipped in spicy ketchup.
All in all, it was a wonderful day, but we still missed our son terribly (with the grandparents)!
